Fixed Bridges

As the name implies, dental bridges are devices that bridge the gap created by a missing tooth.

A bridge consists two crowns or more for the teeth on either side of the gap, and a false tooth in between. The false teeth are known as pontics and are produced from porcelain, alloys, gold, or a combination of these materials. Dental implants or natural teeth support dental bridges.

What do I stand to benefit from fixed bridges?

Bridges help with:

  • Smile restoration
  • Restores your ability to speak and chew properly
  • Maintains your facial shape
  • Prevents your teeth from shifting out of position

Types of dental bridges

At Advanced Family Dental, we have three main types of dental bridges:

  • Traditional bridges: We will create a crown for your tooth or an implant for both sides of the missing tooth. There is a pontic in between. Traditional bridges are popular and made from ceramics or porcelain fused to metal.
  • Cantilever bridges: These type of bridges are used when the patient has adjacent teeth on just one side of the missing tooth. Cantilever bridges are not used at the back of the mouth as it may put very strong force on other teeth and get them damaged.
  • Maryland bonded bridges: They are also referred to as Maryland Bridge or resin-bonded bridge. They are made of porcelain fused to metal, porcelain, or plastic gums and teeth. Porcelain or metal wings from one side of the bridge are bonded to your teeth.

Getting a fixed bridge: The process

During your first visit to Advanced Family Dental, we will prepare what is called an abutment teeth. During preparation, the abutment teeth will be recontoured by removing a portion of the enamel, leaving enough room for the placement of the crown. Next, the dentist will makes impressions of your teeth. It is from these impressions that bridge, crowns, and pontic will be made by a dental laboratory. Our dentist will give you a temporary bridge to wear so as to protect your gums and teeth pending when then bridge will be completed.

On your second visit, we will take off the temporary bridge, and then the new metal or porcelain bridge will be adjusted to fit properly. You may need to visit us often so we can check how well the metal framework fits. This, however, depends on the individual. During the second visit, your temporary bridge will be removed and the new porcelain or metal bridge will be checked and adjusted, as necessary, to achieve a proper fit. Because it is a fixed bridge, the dentist at Advanced Family Dental will cement it temporarily for a couple of weeks to ensure that it is properly fitted. After a few weeks, our dentist will cement the bridge into place.

At advanced Family Dental, your satisfaction is our concern, and so we implant quality bridges that can last a long time. Good fixed bridges last 5-15 years and even more.
