Biopsies
A biopsy is a medical procedure that involves removal of a small piece of tissue from an area of your mouth so that it can be examined under a microscope. We have an excision biopsy and an incisional biopsy. An excision biopsy aims to remove an area completely. This may be appropriate for swellings or small lumps. An incisional biopsy is done over a small area mainly for the purpose of confirming a diagnosis.
How is a biopsy done?
At Advanced Family Dental, biopsies are done under local anesthesia. The effect of the anesthesia is felt a couple of minutes after administration. A small hole is left after the biopsy. The doctor will stitch the hole. At Advanced Family Dental, we use dissolvable stitches that’ll disappear in two weeks. A biopsy is not a long procedure. We can complete it in 15 minutes.
Does a biopsy cause any bleeding?
You will experience very little bleeding during the procedure. However, our doctors will stitch the site immediately after the procedure to ensure that the bleeding stops. If you bleed again at the site, just apply some pressure over the bleeding spot for ten minutes and it’ll cease, but if it persists, please visit us and we will look into it.
Is there any swelling or soreness after a biopsy?
A biopsy done at Advanced Family Dental is not associated with any swelling or pain. The local anesthesia wears off a few hours after the procedure is completed. In some cases, one may be given some mild analgesics (Nurofen or paracetamol). You may experience some mild discomfort for a few days.
Do I need another appointment after the biopsy?
You will be given another appointment after the procedure so that you’ll learn of the results of your biopsy.
