Extractions are also performed to remove teeth that are blocking the eruption of other teeth, creating crowding problems, or contributing to bite misalignment.

Not all extractions are the same. A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is fully erupted above the gumline and has roots in a position that allows the tooth to be loosened and removed without incisions. This may be necessary for a tooth that has broken off at the gumline, one with roots that are curved or have become fused to the surrounding bone, or a tooth that has not fully erupted. Surgical extractions involve carefully reflecting the gum tissue, sometimes removing a small amount of bone to create access, and sectioning the tooth into pieces when the root shape makes removal in one piece inadvisable. Before any extraction, Dr. Triana reviews your health history, current medications, and the 3D radiographic images of the tooth to plan the procedure precisely. Local anesthesia is administered to ensure that the area is thoroughly numb. Most patients are surprised to find that what they feel is pressure and movement rather than pain.

The length of the appointment depends on the complexity of the extraction. Simple extractions are often completed within minutes once anesthesia has taken effect. Surgical cases take longer, particularly when sectioning or bone modification is involved. After the tooth is removed, gauze is placed over the socket and you will be given specific instructions on how to care for the area during healing. These instructions cover diet, activity level, oral hygiene in the area, and what to watch for in terms of normal healing versus signs of a complication.

Most patients recover from a routine extraction within a few days. The first 24 hours are the most important for clot formation, and following the post-operative instructions carefully during this period is essential. Avoiding suction, which can dislodge the clot and lead to a painful condition called dry socket, staying hydrated, and eating soft foods all support smooth healing. Any discomfort is typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers unless Dr. Triana has prescribed something stronger based on the complexity of the procedure.
