If you are experiencing a severe toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the source is removed, swelling around a tooth, or darkening of a tooth, you may have an infection inside the tooth that requires root canal therapy. Seeking prompt treatment is important. A dental infection does not resolve on its own and can spread to surrounding teeth, bone, and even distant parts of the body if left untreated.

At the center of every tooth, beneath the hard enamel and dentin layers, lies a soft tissue chamber called the pulp. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue that were essential during the tooth’s development. However, once a tooth is fully mature, it can survive without the pulp because it continues to receive nourishment from the surrounding tissues.

When bacteria enter the pulp through a deep cavity, a crack, or trauma, the infection causes inflammation and often significant pain. Root canal therapy removes the infected and inflamed pulp tissue, cleans and disinfects the interior of the tooth, and seals it to prevent re-infection. The tooth is then restored with a crown or filling to protect it and restore full function.

Root canal treatment at Advanced Family Dental typically requires one to two appointments, depending on the complexity of the case. The procedure begins with local anesthesia to ensure you are completely comfortable and pain-free throughout the entire treatment. For patients with dental anxiety, we also offer sedation dentistry options that can make the experience even more relaxed.

Once the area is numb, Dr. Triana will place a small protective sheet called a dental dam around the tooth to keep the treatment area clean and dry. She will then create a small opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals. Using precise instruments, the infected pulp is gently removed, and the interior of the tooth is carefully cleaned, shaped, and disinfected. The canals are then filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed. In most cases, a crown is placed over the treated tooth at a subsequent appointment to protect it from future damage and restore its full bite function.

This is the question we hear most often, and the answer surprises many patients. The pain associated with root canal therapy is the pain of the infection, not the treatment itself. Modern anesthetics and refined techniques mean that the procedure itself is typically no more uncomfortable than a routine filling. Most patients report feeling significant relief from their pre-treatment pain within a day or two following the procedure.
