Porcelain Crowns
A dental crown is one of the most versatile and commonly placed restorations in dentistry, capable of solving a wide range of problems with a single, beautifully engineered solution. When a tooth has been compromised, whether by extensive decay, a fracture, root canal treatment, or severe wear, a crown restores its full size, shape, strength, and appearance, giving it the ability to function and look exactly like a healthy natural tooth. At Advanced Family Dental, Dr. Nelcy Triana places tooth-colored porcelain crowns that blend seamlessly with your smile and are fabricated with the precision that our advanced digital imaging technology makes possible.
With more than 30 years of restorative dentistry experience, Dr. Triana has placed countless crowns for patients throughout Kendall and Miami, always with a commitment to conservative preparation, accurate fit, and aesthetics that honor the natural look of each patient’s unique smile. Whether your crown is functional, cosmetic, or both, you can expect a result that is durable, beautiful, and completely comfortable.
When Is a Dental Crown Needed?
A crown becomes necessary when a tooth’s structure is so compromised that a filling or other partial restoration would not provide sufficient strength or protection. The most common situations that call for a crown include a tooth with a cavity so large that the remaining tooth walls cannot support a filling, a tooth that has cracked or fractured significantly, a tooth that has just received root canal treatment and needs to be sealed and protected from future fracture, a tooth with severe wear from grinding that has lost considerable height and structure, a tooth that is broken at or near the gumline, and a tooth that is severely discolored or malformed and does not respond to cosmetic treatments.
Crowns are also used to anchor fixed dental bridges, to restore dental implants with a visible prosthetic tooth, and to address congenital tooth defects or structural abnormalities. Dr. Triana evaluates each situation thoroughly and recommends a crown only when it is genuinely the most appropriate solution for the condition of the tooth.
Why Porcelain?
Modern dental porcelain is a sophisticated material that closely mimics the optical properties of natural tooth enamel. It reflects light in a way that gives teeth depth and vitality, and it can be shaded and layered to match the subtle color variations present in natural teeth. Unlike older metal-based crowns that can show a dark line at the gumline over time, all-porcelain and porcelain-fused-to-zirconia crowns maintain a natural, gum-friendly appearance throughout their lifespan.
Porcelain is also biocompatible, meaning the gum tissue responds well to it and the risk of allergic reaction or tissue irritation is extremely low. For patients who have sensitivities or concerns about metal restorations, tooth colored porcelain crowns provide a safe, effective, and aesthetically superior alternative.
The Crown Process at Advanced Family Dental
Receiving a crown at Advanced Family Dental is a comfortable, streamlined process. At the first appointment, Dr. Triana numbs thearea with local anesthesia to ensure you feel no discomfort during treatment. The tooth is then carefully shaped by removing a controlled layer of enamel and dentin from all surfaces to create space for the crown to fit over it without appearing bulky or altering your bite. The amount of tooth reduction is kept to the minimum necessary for a properly fitting restoration.
Following preparation, our CEREC Omnicam digital scanner captures a precise three-dimensional image of the prepared tooth and the surrounding teeth. This digital impression is far more accurate than traditional putty impressions, which can distort, and eliminates the discomfort of having impression material set in your mouth. The digital scan is sent to the dental laboratory where your custom crown is fabricated to exact specifications. A temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth to protect it and maintain your appearance while the permanent restoration is being made.
At your second appointment, the temporary crown is removed, and Dr. Triana carefully evaluates the fit, color, and bite relationship of your permanent crown before cementing it in place. Any necessary adjustments are made to ensure the crown feels completely natural when you bite and chew. The result is a restoration that is stable,
strong, aesthetically excellent, and designed to last for many years.

Caring for Your Crown
Porcelain crowns are highly durable, but they require the same care and attention as natural teeth. Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, floss daily including around the margins of the crown, and maintain your regular checkup and cleaning schedule at Advanced Family Dental. Avoid habits like chewing ice, biting hard objects, and grinding your teeth without a nightguard, all of which can stress any dental restoration. With consistent care, a well-placed porcelain crown can last 15 years or longer.
At Advanced Family Dental, a crown is never just a restoration. It is a commitment to the long-term health and beauty of your smile, and we treat every crown case with the clinical precision and personal attention that commitment deserves. If you have a tooth that needs a crown, or if you are not sure whether a crown is the right option for your situation, we invite you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Triana at our Kendall practice.
